  4. A3 Satin/(Pearl) Photo Paper 260 gsm

    Posted by Peter O'Neill www.balkanstudios.com on 15th Mar 2011

This is my first order with PPD and living in the Eastern European EU State of Bulgaria where all good quality photography imaging products have to be imported and tend to be extremely expensive for the 'big names', I am always on the look out for good quality photo paper, at a sensible price, backed up with good customer service.
The A3 Satin 260 gsm that arrived last week from PPD was immediately put through my Spyder 3 Studio SR for profiling with the third party pigment inks I use on my Epson R2400. (I also profiled the 5 x 7 size from the same order on an Epson P50).
Although I was expecting a good result after a first look at the test colour patches, for the paper had a good weight, a good finish, took up the ink well and dried quickly, I still left the calibration prints overnight to allow the inks to fully develop. The following day I read the calibration patches, soft proofed and printed the test images within the profiling package and also ran a couple more of my 'personal favourite' images, both colour and Black and White, through the system.

To say I was knocked out would be an understatement. Colour saturation, fine detail, highlight retention and shadow detail were exceptional for a paper of such a sensible price range. Over the years I have tested and used some of the more expensive 'brands' but I cannot see any reason why I should pay double the price for a 'branded' paper that is no better than this PPD Satin paper. The Satin finish is ideal for my output incorporating the best of both worlds being in between Glossy and Matt. For my calibration on the R2400, I found that setting the media to Epson Premium Photo Paper Semi-Gloss at RPM Slow gave me the best result whereas using the same paper in 5 x 7 size on my Epson P50 with normal dye inks I used the same settings but instead of RPM Slow I found RPM High Speed gave as good an image but saves ink and time. Either way, the profiles were spot on for the printer and ink I use which shows the versatility of this paper to use both ink types.

Any criticisms? Well, nothing is perfect and the only point I can identify is the packaging is nothing to write home about. However, I would rather pay the price from PPD and its iffy packaging and get such a superb paper I can easily repack, than pay over the odds for a fancy packet of branded paper which will give no better results and I will throw away the packet anyway. In fairness to PPD, none of the paper arrived damaged in any way despite my criticism of the packaging.

Conclusion. Do not miss this paper for it is exceptional and PPD customer service and delivery is first class, helpful and speedy.
